Tutorial 1 - Safe frames, Field mode and Pixel aspect ratio

This tutorial assumes working with an 720x480 NTSC DV image sequence which is provided in the in the tutorials subdirectory located in AnimPlayer's installation directory. Click here to download a high quality version of this animation.

 1. Load the example image sequence

Setup has already set this image sequence in AnimPlayer's most recently used file list so you can load this sequence within two clicks:

  • click on the little arrow next to the open icon in the toolbar and then
  • click on the filename.

The complete image sequence will be automatically detected and loaded and playback should start automatically. Press [Space] to stop and restart playback.

 2. Other display features

  • Press [S] or the icon to enable safe frames display.
  • Click into the display area, hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse to the left or right to scrub through the animation.
  • Double click the display area, press [F4] or the icon to switch to full screen presentation mode, press [F4] again or [ESC] to exit full screen mode.

 3. TV field playback

other players

You may have already noticed that the example animation is rendered in fields. Using fields is a common way to prevent motion jitter of (fast) moving objects when working for TV, but for some technical reasons PC display technology do not support the playback of fields.

Until now you had to record your image sequence to professional digital video recording equipment to see how your field animation will look like.

AnimPlayer

This is where AnimPlayer takes over with its unique feature to play back each field separately in double speed.

Make sure you have set NTSC as current playback speed, just press the [9] key or use the speed menu.

Now press [F9] or the icon to enter field playback mode. Some brief calculation are made to prepare field playback.

Start playback. The wipe animation is now much smoother, but the AnimPlayer logo animation in the middle is a bit strange, obviously the logo is rendered in a different field order.

Press [F10] or the icon to swap the filed order. Now the logo animation is smooth and nice but the wipe fade is strange.

Try to slow down playback speed by pressing [6] or use the [Left] or [Right] cursor keys to step through the fields. Look at the wipe and the logo and press the [F10] as often as you like to swap the field order (the animated images above don't illustrate this).

Note, the timecode display takes care of field mode and shows for each single frame a .0 or .1 at the end of the current timecode.

With other players you are not be able to detect that one layer of your composition is rendered with the wrong field order. TV field playback is also great to see if you need to add (more) motion blur if your animation is still jittering when using fields.

Press [F9] to exit Field mode. Click here for additional information about field mode.

 4. Adjust the pixel aspect ratio

Move to the middle of the animation (about frame 50 or NTSC Timecode 1:20) where you can see the incoming elliptical wipe.

Pixel aspect ratio menu

Actually it is a circular wipe, so let's adjust the pixel aspect ratio. In the Main-Menu select:

Size / NTSC / NTSC DV 720 x 480
or simply press [Shift]+[1].

When selecting a preset with the mouse also have a look at the Infobar, where additional information is displayed.

Once adjusted you can lock AnimPlayer's display area to that aspect ratio, just press the [L] key or use the menu above.

In case the presets don't suit your needs, press [Q] or click the icon to precisely adjust any image and pixel aspect ratio.

Pixel aspect ratio adjustment works non destructive and is performed using hardware acceleration (if available).
